The Huge Wide Ride charity cycle has successfully reached its destination, and has raised over R160 000 for an 8-year old girl suffering from a rare condition. The challenge saw a primary school headmaster from Elgin cycling 2,100 kilometers across the entire breadth of South Africa.

The Huge Wide Ride kicked off on the 8th of April 2009, when Gareth Allman, headmaster of Applewood Preparatory School, embarked on an epic 21-day cycle to collect money for Roxy Sutton, one of the school’s pupils. Roxy requires urgent surgery, which is only offered by a few specialized centres abroad, to correct a rare condition. Roxy suffers from the rare Crouzonodermoskeletal syndrome, which affects the way her cranial and facial bones grow, and is one of only 18 documented cases worldwide.

The Huge Wide Ride Challenge required Allman to cycle across South Africa along the widest latitudinal distance separating our two coastlines – from Alexander Bay on the west coast to Kosi Bay on the east coast – a distance of approximately 2,100km. Although Allman is no stranger to a bicycle, having participated in numerous cycling events, he admits that the journey was a long and tiring one, but that the success of the event made it infinitely worthwhile.

“The money collected will go a long way towards helping this little girl realise her dreams,” says Anton Potgieter, executive chairman of Huge Group, which stepped in as the premier sponsor of the Huge Wide Ride after hearing of Allman’s selfless and ‘huge’ undertaking for Roxy. Potgieter notes, “We salute Gareth’s charity and determination, and we are proud to have been able to help make sure Roxy will get the medical attention she needs.”

Anyone wanting to make a R5 donation to this worthy cause can still do so by SMSing ‘wideride’ to 36070, or by downloading a pledge form from the website.
